“The Trap of Pride”

1 Corinthians 14:36

Did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached?

Thoughts for Today:

In our passage today, it seems as if Paul is using a little sarcasm. In fact, I might paraphrase his question as follows: "Hey Church of Corinth, what do you think, has the Word of God only come to you? Does it originate or have benefit for you alone?" Paul is talking about spiritual pridefullness. The Corinthians had fallen into the trap of thinking more highly of themselves than they should. Why? Because of the manifestation of spiritual gifts within the church -- they thought the existence and demonstration of the gifts proved their spiritual superiority and authority.

It is one reason I believe the gifts are not in more evidence today. Not because they have been withdrawn by the Lord or are no longer necessary. Rather, we are just one spiritual gift away from going "viral" with a YouTube video demonstrating our own personal spiritual superiority. Think about it, where would the glory go? It might begin with the right intentions, but after numerous appearances on the talk show circuit, a little pridefullness might enter in. It's our nature, and God knows our hearts.

Questions to Ponder:

Have you developed your own brand of spiritual pridefullness? Do you give off an air of superiority as you compare yourself to others? Do you think the Lord will continue to bless those who hold onto these attitudes?
