“"Introduction to 2 Corinthians 3"”

2 Corinthians 3

Introduction

Thoughts for Today:

There existed, within the Corinthian church, a group of people who opposed Paul. They challenged his authority to rebuke and instruct, and considered his approach to be full of arrogance and self-commendation. At the beginning of Chapter 3, Paul will clear himself of these charges, before moving on to completely new subject matter.

I find it interesting, how smoothly Paul transitions from addressing questions of his character and qualifications, to an in-depth discussion of Biblical principles. It clearly demonstrates that his answer had a great deal to do with his grasp of complex Biblical concepts. In other words, the insight was not his own, but provided by God. Paul was simply His chosen spokesperson. Would they question God's authority?

As Paul alters his commentary toward further edification of the Corinthian believers, he will offer a comparison between the governance of the Law versus the Gospel. He will illustrate that one is far more preferable to the other. Can you guess which one? The Law or God's grace? Can you explain why? Read on.

Questions to Ponder:

Before we move on, I think it is important to recognize that God has given certain godly men and women a place in our lives to rebuke, challenge and instruct us. We may not like what they say, but is it truth? How do you react to these types of words? Do you criticize the speaker, or does it lead to an examination of your heart?
