“"Taste it First, Then We'll See It"”

Thoughts for Today:

When I was a young man I was convinced the Bible was the Word of God. Still my belief didn't stop me from intellectually debating and researching the Word in order to confirm that it was indeed the Lord's message to humanity. Maybe it's an age thing, but today I don't need any further intellectual demonstrations. I'm beyond that. To me the proof of the Word of God is in what it does -- changed lives.

The Psalmists said (Psalm 34:8): "Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him." I think it's really important to notice the order. Our tendency is to say, "If I see it first, then I'll taste it." But the Lord's way is to taste it first -- then we'll see it.

The King James Version of our passage today provides a little more insight: "And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward." In other words, our confidence and trust must be placed in Christ first and foremost. He is our portion and fullness. When we eat His body and drink of His blood we taste a richness and experience satisfaction we will never find without Him. Intellectual debates and research are fine, but the real proof is in the sustenance -- "the bread of life" -- and the lives that are changed as a result.

Questions to Ponder:

We must taste His sacrifice, before we experience the joy of His forgiveness. So we won't see lasting change unless and until we give our lives over to the Lord in response to the proof He provided of His love for us in Christ. From what (or whom) do you receive your sustenance? What's lacking in your life? Will you renew your confidence in Him?
