2 Corinthians 5:15
And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.
When I was a teenager, a friend and I went hiking in the hills and canyons near our home. With youthful exuberance we took off without first making sure we knew exactly where we parked our car. As the day grew longer we tried to retrace our path, but ended up just hiking in a circle. Worse for the wear, but no better off.
It would be kind of like humanity, after generations of life on the earth and all the trials, tribulations and turmoil, once again returning to the Garden of Eden. It would be nice to be back, but we would be no better off. Why? Because the potential of temptation, sin, punishment, and subsequent separation from God would still be possible. If you didn't succumb to sin, then I would. One of us would mess up in some way and we would be back out hiking around in confusion.
However, that is not the case for believers in Christ. He died, not only to deliver us from judgment for our sin and death, but also to bring us up into a new life. Not in a circle and back to where we began, but all the way to heaven.
The Christian life for some people is all about returning to the Garden of Eden. Fellowship with the Lord and enjoying His presence, but still hiding sin. He died so you could live. Will you begin living today? Will you leave your sin now? Jesus said to the woman at the well (John 8:10-12): "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" "No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin."
