“"Something Isn't Right "”

Galatians 5:9

"A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough."

Thoughts for Today:

When the words "yeast" or "leaven" are used symbolically in Scripture, it usually means that something is not right. For example:

Incorrect doctrine (Matthew 16:12): "Then they understood that he [Jesus] was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

Hypocrisy (Luke 12:1): "Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: 'Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.'"

Sin (1 Corinthians 5:6-7): "Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough? Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed."

Malice and weakness (1 Corinthians 5:8): "Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth."

The really difficult thing about legalism is it starts off small (symbolically like "yeast") and with the right motives. It can begin with something as simple as concern for the well being of our children or congregation. We care so much about them that we put up a perimeter and boundaries to keep them out of trouble. It begins with sincerity and good intentions, yet ends in disaster. Why? Because any rules and regulations we construct related to our walk with the Lord, produce either self-glorification or condemnation. And even the smallest amount of a false gospel will eventually corrupt everything -- it will cause the whole system of grace to fall.

Questions to Ponder:

When was the last time you checked the doctrine you teach with the truth of Scripture? Often times I am surprised when Christians share with me what they believe. I always ask, "Show me where it says that in the Bible." Most of the time either it was a misunderstanding of a passage or teaching that has taken them off course. Will you set aside some time to review your doctrine this week?
