1 Corinthians 2:14
The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.
2 Timothy 2:25-26 tells us: "Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will." So the idea of modern man -- that he is a moral "free agent" is ludicrous. Paul told Timothy that mankind is taken captive by Satan against his will: blinded and bound. That's why it seems to be foolishness when the person without the Spirit (the natural man) hears the Word.
I learned a long time ago to first pray, "Lord, please remove the blindfold Satan has placed on this person's eyes, the plugs in his ears, and the constraints on his mind. Open the eyes, ears and mind to see, hear and understand Your truth." Many of our witnessing opportunities are lost and ineffective because we fail to understand that Satan has pitted himself against our success. When our words are preceded by prayer, the Spirit intercedes, and the mind is opened to the real issues and consequence of sin. Otherwise they won't truly hear our words.
Have you ever wondered why a loved one cannot understand the grace, goodness and love of God? Pray first for eyes, ears, and mind to be opened!
